1. WHY CHOOSE RESURFACING OVER REPLACEMENT?
The main reason people look into replacing their fixtures is due to the wear and tear to the top layers of the fixture even though the integrity of the actual structure is still strong. Removing your kitchen’s worn-out sink, countertop, or backsplash can be a costly project, not to mention the mess and downtime associated with that type of renovation. The same goes for your bathroom’s tub, vanity and tile floor. When Michael’s Resurfacing LLC takes on a project, we work to repair damaged areas like cuts, burns, chips and cracks. Our surface restoration restores your fixture’s surfaces, extending their life in most cases for 15+ years. Resurfacing a fixture is usually a fraction of the cost of replacement and without the mess and downtime of a major remodel. In just 2-3 days, you can have bathtubs, tile walls, vanities, and kitchen countertops that look and feel like new again.
2. IS RESURFACING AS HARD AS PORCELAIN
No. Porcelain is a glass that is fired onto the surface at temperatures around 1600 degrees. The porcelain finish is hard and fairly resistant to scratches and of course has no problems with peeling. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be scratched or it doesn’t chip…it does both.
Resurfacing on the other hand, is the application of a synthetic material onto the existing surface and doesn’t require extreme temperatures in order to cure onto the surface. While the new finish may not be as hard as original porcelain, it is extremely durable. In most cases, if applied correctly, the average person would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between an original porcelain surface and a resurfaced finish.
Michael’s Resurfacing LLC uses only quality top-coat materials. You can be assured of getting a finish that rivals the look and feel of porcelain. Cheaper top-coat materials result in duller, less durable finishes. Unfortunately many refinishers ‘shop’ for the cheapest materials and care little for the long term durability of the final product.
3. CAN COUNTERTOPS BE RESURFACED?
Absolutely! In fact countertop resurfacing has advanced to the point that the products are incredibly durable and they have a great stone-like look and feel.
We recommend that you don’t cut on the surface (Please use a cutting board). If you drop a heavy sharp object you could chip or gouge the surface. Don’t worry, the surface can be repaired. Of course those same issues with chips and gouges can apply to pretty much any counter surface such as laminate or Formica, Solid Surfaces such as Corian, Granite, or Tile. You might be able to cut on Granite or Tile, but both can be damaged by falling objects.
We have some great color selections and can transform your countertops usually in two and a half days. Don’t go and spend thousands of dollars replacing your countertops when you can resurface them for a lot less money.
4. WHAT TYPES OF COUNTERTOPS CAN BE RESURFACED?
The following are some of the most common countertops we can resurface:
- Cultured Marble
- Solid surfaces
5. WHAT SURFACES CAN BE REPAIRED AND RESURFACED?
Many surfaces in your bathroom and kitchen can be resurfaced:
- Bathtubs, Showers and Sinks
- Cultured Marble
- Acrylic surfaces
- Antique claw foot tubs and sinks
- Ceramic Tile
- Tub Surrounds
- Countertops and Vanities
- Cultured Marble
- Ceramic Tile
6. HOW LONG WILL RESURFACING LAST?
If the care and maintenance recommendations are followed, you can expect your resurfaced fixture to last 15 + years.
7. HOW DURABLE IS THE FINISH?
Michael’s Resurfacing LLC uses the most technologically advanced coatings available. These finishes are designed to stand up to daily use and do not require special care. However, like any bathtub, laminate, tile or manmade surface, a refinished surface can be chipped, cut or burned if it is abused. However, unlike these other surfaces, Michael’s Resurfacing LLC can repair and return a refinished surface to like new.
8. DOES IT REQUIRE SPECIAL CARE?
You will find our care instructions are similar to those for most brand new bathtubs or countertops. Do not use cleaners that contain abrasives, harsh acids, or bleach. Most bathtubs, sinks and tile become worn and dull due to abrasive cleansers, not from time.
9. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
Every job is unique. A standard size bathtub, in reasonable condition and with minimal repair can be resurfaced in about 24 hours. You will be without the use of the bathtub for one night.
Most kitchen countertops take about 2 days with us detailing and cleaning up after ourselves the morning of the 3rd day.
The timing of your particular job will be discussed in depth during the estimate and again when you book the job with us.
10. HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I SAVE?
Resurfacing kitchen and bathroom surfaces can save you up to 75% over the cost of replacement. Bathtub replacement starts with a new bathtub, which will typically cost between $200 and $500. However, the total cost of demolition and installation can be $3000 or more!
11. CAN RUST BE REPAIRED?
Yes! BUT there’s a caveat. If you have rust attacking your fixtures we can usually repair the damage with ease. Rust (or oxidation) is a common issue in bathrooms and kitchens due to the common occurrence of water accumulation in these areas. Rust turns the once strong metal structure into a weakened, brittle form. By removing the rust and applying material to prevent future rusting before refinishing the surface we can make headway into containing the rust problem. Unfortunately there can be no guarantee that the rust will not eventually work its way back and actually damage the refinished area.
Rust is a lot like a cancer. You attack and treat what you can find, but sometimes all it takes is a little bit left to eventually come back. Always be wary of a refinisher who does little or nothing to the rusted areas before resurfacing the fixture. Refinishing right over rust without taking steps to treat it will spell disaster to the refinishing. This leads to costly maintenance down the road and possibly the need for an entirely new refinishing job or the fixture can become so damaged that it has to be replaced.
12. CAN YOU FIX ANOTHER COMPANIES WORK?
Yes. We can repair the work of another company. When other companies work fails our skilled technicians can remove the failed finish and replace it with a new finish, bringing it up to our standard of quality.
13. WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE YOU COME?
We ask that you have a working drain available as the extensive cleaning procedures we use will require several rinses to complete the prep work before resurfacing. In addition, if there is a leak from your faucet, you should have that repair completed prior to the refinishing process. It is very important that no water fall on the newly refinished surface for the agreed upon amount of time.
14. HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT BEFORE I CAN USE MY REFINISHED BATHTUB?
We require that you wait 24 hours before using the refinished fixture. Any damage caused by touching or using the refinished items prior to the 24 hours will not be covered under the warranty.
15. WILL IT SMELL DURING THE RESURFACING PROCESS….OR AFTER?
There will be some odor associated with resurfacing. Bathtub resurfacing top coats contain solvents, which are necessary to make the finish hard and durable. A majority of the odor should dissipate within 24, 48 hours.
16. CAN YOU CHANGE THE COLOR?
Most of the jobs we complete are done for the purpose of changing color or style. Solid color changes can be made to any color of your choosing. We can special order exact matches to several major brand names such as Kohler, American Standard, Toto and more. If you have a color which you are unable to name, you can send us a sample chip or tile and we can have that exact matched by our coatings supplier.
17. DO YOU OFFER A WARRANTY?
Yes! Bathtubs, wall tile countertops, and fiberglass fixtures are warranted for 5 years. The warranty covers workmanship, peeling or other failure of adhesion of the new coating, unless specified otherwise.
You will receive a copy of the warranty when you are given your written estimate.
18. MY BATHROOM IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION, AT WHAT STAGE SHOULD WE SCHEDULE THE TUB / TILE TO BE RESURFACED?
We prefer to be the last procedure completed in your bathroom remodel. There are exceptions to this rule. Those exceptions will be addressed during your estimate if they apply.
19. WHY SHOULD I SELECT MICHAEL’S RESURFACING LLC?
Resurfacing performed with the right materials and using the right procedures produces incredibly beautiful results! But not all refinishing is the same. No other refinisher delivers the quality work or level of service consistently offered by Michael’s Resurfacing LLC.
